Intent
Why we teach this
- Every child leaves Cosmos confident in their home language and increasingly fluent in English.
- Code-switching is welcomed and made explicit — children learn how to move between languages.
- Reading and storytelling are taught in all three languages where appropriate.
Implementation
How it lands in classrooms
- Cambridge English as a Second Language (ESL) supports learners for whom English is not first-spoken at home.
- Hindi and Telugu run as taught subjects with their own script, vocabulary and literature.
- Oracy lanes are shared with the English team — sentence stems and partner talk are bilingual.
- Stories from India (folktales, modern picture books) sit alongside the English reading spine.
Impact
What learners can do
- By Grade 2, children read short stories in their home language and a growing range of English texts.
- By Grade 5, children can hold a sustained conversation, write a short piece, and read independently in two languages.
