Intent
Why we teach this
- Every child writes legibly with appropriate speed.
- Pencil grip, posture and letter formation are taught explicitly — never left to chance.
- Handwriting becomes automatic so working memory is free for ideas.
Implementation
How it lands in classrooms
- Write Right · Transcription is the school spine: daily 10-minute sessions in EY and KS1, three sessions a week in KS2.
- Print formation in EY → entry strokes in KS1 → joined cursive from Grade 2/3.
- Letter families taught together (long ladder · curly caterpillar · one-armed robot · zigzag).
- Posture, paper position and grip checks built into every session.
Impact
What learners can do
- By UKG, children form all 26 letters and digits 0–9 correctly.
- By Grade 2, children write legibly and begin joining.
- By Grade 5, children write in a fluent, personal joined hand at sustained pace.
