Publication: Student Book 1, Teacher Handbook Status: In Progress Type: Level Overview
🌱 **Purpose** Level 1 builds the *physical foundations* of handwriting before any letter is taught. Children develop the fine-motor strength, pencil control, posture habits, and pattern vocabulary they will rely on for the rest of the programme.
## Who is this for? **Year group:** Nursery → Reception (Ages 3–5) **Duration:** A full school year, embedded across the day **Daily time:** 5–10 minutes focused practice + ongoing motor play --- ## Aims By the end of Level 1, children can: - Hold a writing tool with a functional tripod or adapted-tripod grip - Apply appropriate, even pressure - Move consistently left-to-right - Form anticlockwise circles independently - Reproduce all seven core pattern types - Sit, position paper, and grip the pencil correctly without prompting --- ## Curriculum at a glance | **Strand** | **Focus** | | --- | --- | | P-Checks | Daily Posture, Pencil, Paper, Pressure ritual | | Gross motor | Whole-arm patterns; shoulder & elbow strength | | Fine motor | Pinch, manipulate, tear, thread, mould | | Pre-writing patterns | Lines, circles, zigzags, dots, spirals, loops, figure-8 | | Multisensory | Sand, foam, paint, playdough, chalk, gel pens | --- ## Weekly rhythm
📆 **Each day:** P-Checks ritual → 2-min motor warm-up → pattern of the week → free creative pattern play
- **Monday** — introduce the new pattern at large scale - **Tuesday** — practise at medium scale (sand, foam) - **Wednesday** — fine-motor scale on paper - **Thursday** — fill a shape template with the pattern - **Friday** — review & celebrate --- ## The seven pattern families 1. **Straight lines** — vertical, horizontal, diagonal 2. **Circles** — anticlockwise (priority), clockwise 3. **Zigzags & waves** 4. **Dots** 5. **Spirals** — outward & inward 6. **Loops** — garlands (∪) & arcades (∩) 7. **Figure of eight** — vertical & horizontal Full pattern bank, patter scripts, and assessment indicators: [Patterns: Level 1 (Ready to Write)](Patterns%20Level%201%20(Ready%20to%20Write)%209577366c583642a4b0ce85ae35d1697e.md). --- ## P-Checks habit formation This is the level where the four P-Checks become automatic. Forcing letter shapes before motor readiness is the single biggest cause of bad habits in older writers.
--- ## Exit criteria → Level 2 A child is ready to move on when they can: - Independently apply the 4 P-Checks before writing - Form anticlockwise circles without reminders - Reproduce all seven pattern families recognisably - Maintain a functional pencil grip for 5+ minutes - Show clear left-to-right directionality --- ## Linked components - [Patterns: Level 1 (Ready to Write)](Patterns%20Level%201%20(Ready%20to%20Write)%209577366c583642a4b0ce85ae35d1697e.md) - [Pre-Writing Patterns Worksheets (L1-WS-01 to 07)](Pre-Writing%20Patterns%20Worksheets%20(L1-WS-01%20to%2007)%207579c016b28248fbbf7742c527ec1392.md) - [NHA Framework Overview](NHA%20Framework%20Overview%207722c4fd8c784a068e601673ebea8551.md) - [WR-PLD-02: P-Checks Deep Dive](WR-PLD-02%20P-Checks%20Deep%20Dive%207a216b5c5c71434b88e1a24adb438932.md)
